Plesiosaur Tooth

Plesiosaur tooth from Khouribga, Morocco.

70 million years old.

First appearing 203 million years ago, Plesiosaurs were marine reptiles recognized by a body structure typically featuring four powerful paddle-shaped flippers, a broad body and in many species an exceptionally long neck with a small head. Their disappearance was due to the Paleogene extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago.

First discovered in the beginning of the 19th Century, more than 100 valid species have been described. Increased discoveries in the early 21st century has led to an improved understanding of their anatomy, relationships and way of life.

They breathed air and bore live young with some indications that they were warm-blooded.
